In this stage independence becomes more important. With the introduction of all-day school, the
outside world starts to come into more focus now. Children can play competitive games and sports
and many can sit down long enough to play family board games. Craft projects and complex
puzzles may be started but not finished. This is a very active stage, so go run around: fly a kite,
race to the fencepost, play catch! Your child is getting better at "using his words" to work out
problems, so help develop his communication skills by doing a project together. Talk it out: When
you model cooperation-"I'll connect this piece while you put that together"-you're also helping your
child understand how important it is to communicate to get the job done.
