Developed by Boeing in the late 1930's the B-17 was given its "Flying Fortress" monilker by a reporter for a Seattle area newpaper. Later versions were even more heavily armed and were flown in close formations where they could mass their fire power against enemy fighters. The Royal Air Force had always bombed at night and was skeptical about the ability of the Eighth Air Force to survive bombing during the day. Ultimately the B-17 flew deep into the Third Reich to blast German war production facilities. Of the 1.5 million metric tons of bombs dropped on Germany by U.S. aircraft, 640,000 tons were dropped from B-17s. As of September 2011 only 13 B-17's remain airworthy.
