The B-17 Flying Fortress and the B-24 Liberator were the workhorse US bombers during WWII and wreaked irrepairable damage on the German war machine. Over 18,000 Liberators were built during the war and at one point they were rolling off the assembly lines at the rate of one every 100 minutes.
The Liberator bombers also made a great contribution to Allied victory in the Battle of the Atlantic against German U-boats. The long range Liberators of Coastal Command were able to eliminate the "mid-atlantic" gap where German U-boats had congregated in relative safety. Liberators were credited in full or in part with 72 U-boat sinkings.
