The Zero or Zeke was the most recognizable Japanese fighter plane of WWII. In fact, the Zero was built in larger numbers during the war than any other aircraft. During the first years of WWII the Zero was considered one of the best fighter planes in the world. Its combination of agility and long range was unprecedented and it was equally effective whether operated from aircraft carriers or from land bases.
Its agility and range could be attributed to its construction from lightweight alloys and the omission of normal equipment like self sealing fuel tanks. Unbeatable early in the war the Zero began to lose its superiority as the Allies brought better planes into the fight. By the end of the war the Zero became the plane most frequently used in Kamikaze attacks.
